Welcome to the Braveheart Custom RC Yacht building page

As we all faced a year or more of lockups and restrictions because of the COVID pandemic, like many I sought out a way to keep myself busy and sane while waiting for the plague to blow over. I have a major interest in model sailboat racing but I had never built a model RC sailboat from scratch. My first attempt was the Mistral, a US1M class design. After completing the Mistral I developed an interest in 3D printed model sailboats. After searching the Internet for a candidate design I settled on the BetaSabre from 3Dprintedradioyachts. I downloaded the STL files and off I went.

BetaSabre RC Yacht

The Sabre "Race Ready" experience.

The Beta Sabre was designed by Bill Hagerup (USA) and Selwyn Holland (AUS) as an IOM class racing RC model sailboat for 3D printing 3D Printed Boats Downloads. Since the IOM class has very fussy class rules and because I didn’t intend to race it in a sanctioned regatta, I took liberties with the specifications to make the build easier and to make sailing it more fun.
My BetaSabre uses components and design elements not permitted by IOM class rules including:

  • Carbon fiber keel fin, advanced design keel bulb
  • One piece carbon mast
  • Mylar 5 panel Sails

Specification:

  • Length :  40 in.
  • Beam:  5 1/2 in.
  • Mast Height: 58 1/2 in.
  • Overall Height: 75 in.
  • Total Weight: 6 lbs.
  • Hull Material: eSUN PLA+ 3D printing filament

Mistral RC Yacht

The Mistral "Race Ready" experience.

The Mistral is a US1M class design available from the AMYA US1M webpage. It’s a traditional wooden construction using balsa planking with a glass fiber covering. My implementation of the Mistral features a keel fin adapted from a DF95 DragonFlite carbon fiber keel fin. The keel bulb is based on a NACA airfoil implemented using lead shot and epoxy to mold the shape. The sails are home made from Mylar and feature a paneled construction with inbuilt curvature.

Features of my Mistral construction include:

  • Carbon fiber keel fin, advanced design keel bulb
  • Shroud less, keel step, one piece carbon mast
  • Mylar paneled sails

Specification:

  • Length : 39 1/4 in.
  • Beam: 8 1/2 in.
  • Mast Height: 65 in.
  • Overall Height: 84 1/2 in
  • Total Weight: 7.5 lbs.
  • Hull Material: Wooden construction, balsa planked with fiberglass skin
